Internet Marketing 101
March 21st, 2003
Hey everyone;
Networking Works!
This past week I had the opportunity to go to Joel Christopher's MasterListBuilders
workshop. As fate would have it I missed the hotel courtesy van by 3 minutes.
So just great. :-(
I thought, well it will give me a few minutes to unwind from the flight
before getting to the motel (I was trying to turn a negative into a positive).
As I was waiting I noticed a young gentleman pacing and talking on his
cell phone a few yards away from me and I thought he looked familiar.
Once the van arrived and we got on (there were only 3 of us since we missed
the first one which was full) I introduced myself to the young man. Hey
what can I say, it turned out to be Alex
Mandossian, that's why he looked familiar!
So we had a great conversation on the way to the hotel and I had a chance
to meet and talk with a great marketer one on one. He also invited me
to a dinner party hosted by himself that night for some people and speakers
attending the conference. Why did he invite me? Because I took the initiative
to introduce myself. Good stuff.
The dinner was interesting as well. Everyone introduced themselves and
one gentleman in particular stood out with his intro. He said "Hi
everyone, I'm Sunny from Maui !"
After it sunk in everyone remembered Sunny the whole conference. He wore
a Hawaii style shirt and that further associated sunny with Sunny from
Maui. This was a great example of using a unique thing to get people to
remember you. By the way you can visit Sunny at Bizbuild.com,
he is a business coach.
Yeah I know, conferences cost money no doubt about it. This was my first
one in almost 5 years of online marketing. Was it worth it? You bet,
I got a lot of great ideas, and met some great new contacts that I'll
be able to network with in the future.
Plus, I got to put faces with those people that I have known for years
via email. I finally got to meet Paul Myers face to face whom I've known
for almost 5 years. Paul is a riot! Check out his TalkBiz newsletter at:
http://www.talkbiz.com
As some of you know, I have started putting together teleconferences
and I'm also setting up one on one interviews with some of the experts
in the online community.
Well let me just say that after attending this event I have plenty of
interviews pre-planned now, and working on another teleconference to be
announced in the near future from the contacts I made at this event. I
have also been asked about several co-op projects for the future.
Ok, ok, Gary so what's the point, I know you are wondering?
Networking with others does work to build your online business.
Sure I have heard and known this all along, BUT I can't express how much
I found this to be true until attending one of these events.
Yes they are expensive, but you can watch for local events that will save
motel and flight costs. Watch for events that give free admission, sure
you will have to sit through some sales pitches for the free ones, but
just one good contact or idea can make the event worth while.
Notes For Success:
1. Start today keeping track of all your contacts and their information.
Use a software package such as Outlook to manage your information. I also
created a software program specifically for marketers that does
this plus more at:
http://www.InternetInformationManager.com
2. Try to contact them regularly if only to see how they are doing
and if you can be of help.
3. Find people in your chosen area of interest and setup a small
group of peers. Get together regularly to discuss problems, brainstorm,
and how you might help each other. You will see this sometimes referred
to as a Master Mind Group.
Call it what you like, JUST do it!
4. Don't push aside local contacts or dimiss contacts from the
off line world. Tell everyone (casually of course) what you do. Hand out
a business card. YOU never know when that someone could help you in the
future. Oh yeah, be sure to get a business card from them and add them
to your contact database.
5. DON'T think in terms of what you can get from the relationship
only. Think in terms of how you can help that person.
6. As noted earlier, watch for local events that are in your chosen
profession or business interest if your budget is limited. Heck do this
even if it isn't limited.
Ok, so enough on that already, just take action and start applying
the above steps into your business plan today. It's long term results
and they will work.
Ok, are you into search engines? Well most marketers are...grin...
Check out the below link for a great free software program to help you
with targeting your keywords for the search engines and pay per clicks
and for setting up your meta tags in your web pages.
An excerpt from their website:
" Good Keywords makes use of various tools provided by search engines
like the Overture Search Suggestion Tool, Search Engines Like Lycos, Google,
Teoma and other services like Alexa. Please note that you can manually
do most of the tasks performed by Good Keywords. However using Good Keywords
makes it all very simple, fast and straight forward."
Hey, this is a great tool if you will use it and it's free.
http://www.goodkeywords.com
Don't use this tool just for targeting primary keywords, but look for
terms that real people are searching for. Try to focus on targeted keywords
that will bring people to your site that are looking for something specific
such as your product. The more targeted your traffic, the higher the conversion
rate. After all you don't just want traffic, you want buyers!!!!
Well gotta run, our cat Gimpy is pounding me in the head to be fed.
I'm going to discuss teleseminars next week and how to most benefit from
them.
See ya'll next week, same day, same place!
