Internet Marketing 101

August 8th, 2003

Hello y'all;

Hmmm, sometimes I wonder if I'm coming or going...know what I mean. Geeesh, as usual in my haste last week after the flood of problems and tasks that I was attempting to get done, I made a mistake. Of course the lack of sleep probably didn't help either.

Don't you just hate it when you do that though? What's even worse is having to tell everyone. Well not really I guess, it's shows you are human...grin... but more on that in a moment.

I mentioned a friend of mine and fellow publisher's newsletter last week (Jim Mitchell), and I used the wrong URL. I only knew this after Jim let me know via an email. Well I corrected the online version of last week's newsletter, but decided to also mention it this week as well to make it up to Jim, plus it serves up a lesson, at least to me.

What's worse, is for the past several months when reading his newsletter I have always noted the URL and several times visited his site. However each time I visited, I went to the wrong URL, (the same one I posted last week), but never realized it was the wrong URL. For some reason I was leaving off two letters on the front of his link...DUHHHH... what can I say. Funny thing is both sites are his.

Major mental block for some reason, my brain (no surprise) wasn't processing the additional two letters. So when I posted the URL I posted what my brain was telling me and not what my eyes were actually seeing.

Surely some of you have had this happen to you?

Is this a lack of actually paying attention, or assuming what we see is what we see; when it isn't, or some unexplained mal-function of the brain.

I would love to have your thoughts or incidents of this happening to you if you would share them with us.

So to a degree I have to eat crow this week, in the fact that I said; take action, get something going and then fine tune the project. I still maintain you have to take action, get something finished and get it going, however maybe a little fine tuning before hand wouldn't hurt...grin...

Anyway let me correct the mistake I made.
Jims real newsletter URL (note the "ok." which I left out) is:

http://ok.earnyoursuccess.com

Sign up for his "Opportunity Knocks" newsletter and you get a free bonus ebook, with resell rights, by Jimmy D. Brown called "How To Outsell Other Resellers And Become A Super Affiliate." He also includes a free bonus in each issue. Give him a try!

Let's move on.

Ok, I mentioned earlier about being human, and that's one of the things that I learned from the Gals Night Out teleseminar I did a couple of weeks ago. These gals really "connect" with their readers. Admitting you are wrong shows you are human. Well for that matter making mistakes also does too. But admitting you made the mistake as well "steps it up a notch". It really brings out the fact you care about your readers and you do care about giving them good information and service.

Their readers (the gals) know they are real people. They talk to their readers rather than just shoot out a formal "business sounding" type newsletter, now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that either. Formal business newsletters have their place, in fact some people may prefer that format rather than a more informal newsletter.

Me personally it's much easier to ramble along and talk to you, rather than putting out a formal, structured newsletter. Been there, done that, and I really think it's much easier, especially for the new person looking to start a newsletter to use a more informal style.

Of course this also depends upon the nature of your newsletter and your target audience. I suppose if your newsletter targeted surgeons then I'm sure they would love hearing "Well y'all pick up that thar scalpel and slice a gash across the belly."

Well anyway I hope you get my drift of what I'm trying to say.

I would love to hear your opinions on this, please shoot me your comments.

As I'm sitting here writing this, I'm watching my cat Gimpy slowly be driven into a frenzy by a bird. Gimpy sits in front of our full view storm door and looks out at the cars, rabbits, dogs and birds passing by outside.

You see, we have this one Mockingbird that has been around here for about three years. Everytime I mow the lawn he (or she) follows me around and feasts on the bugs in the freshly mowed grass.

A week ago the bird landed on our porch and found himself face to face with Gimpy. Of course the storm door blocked them from each other. Ever since that day (about 10 days ago) the bird continously, all day long comes to our porch and dances around, jumps, hops and drives Gimpy mad. You can tell the bird is doing it intentionally. After all he never has before in the three years since he took up residency in our trees.

My point being, in marketing we need to do the same thing. Bring your prospect up to a "want to buy" frenzy, but that doesn't mean over hype either. I think the "over hype" is turning more and more people away.

Make them want to buy. Tantalize them with what problems your product or service will solve in their life. Be sure to whet their appetite with your offer and the solutions it will bring.

THEN after the sale, unlike Gimpy and the bird, don't have a storm door between you and the customer, "connect" with them. Let them know you are concerned about their needs and concerns. Answer any questions they may have. Go that extra step to insure them you care about their needs. I can guarantee you, once that customer buys from you, the percentages greatly increase they will buy from you again.

Ok, onward we go.

Next week I'll be doing a free interview-teleconference radio show at my http://www.CrazyWebGuy.com site with Joel Christopher of http://www.SuccessAccess.com and http://www.MasterListBuilder.com. He will be speaking about:

"How To Become A Best Selling Author Without Writing A Single Word".

Let me just mention that he will reveal more than just tips about writing a book, and I know some great marketing tips will also come from the interview. I'll see to that...grin.. plus the listeners will have the opportunity to ask some questions during the event.

Joel has become the Tiger Woods of list building and wrote a book that became a #2 bestseller on Amazon.

Date and Time: Wednesday August 13th at 12:00 Pacific, 2:00 Central, and 3:00 Eastern time.
